Ascension Address

Twenty years ago, on the tarmac of the city’s airport, a man - middle aged even then - in a general’s uniform had stood and made a speech. There was no audience; the army has sealed off the airport, and the other decorated generals behind the man were just for show, as were the attack helicopters lazily spinning their rotors in the background. But the address was televised, and broadcast on radio. It was reprinted in full in newspapers across the world, and discussed at length in every corridor of power.Every citizen knew of that proclamation, for it altered the fate of their country irreversibly.

Now old, the general - he still styled himself as a general - had the sheet of paper he read from framed in the national Museum of the Revolution. The single act, that single speech, had not been all that was needed to sweep the old, corrupt government from power; no, there had been fighting, years of it, millions dead. But that was in the past now, and the last decade had been peaceful. He had give his country security, and protected it from outside forces. Was that not worth a little blood spilled?

Apparently there was no loyalty in this world, though, no gratitude, for his courtiers, sensing weakness in his age, had started to circle. He had made them, each and every one; he had elevated them to wealth and power, while under the old Parliament they would have been, what, merchants? Academics? Pfeh. If money can’t buy you loyalty these days, what can?

Force. Only force.

If you want my power, he thought to himself, you’ll have to prise it from my hands.

Repeal all dynastic rules, replace MN wherever it appears in the Ruleset with Oligarch, and replace Speaker wherever it appears with Despot.

Posts of Interest

  • Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely gave everyone Power, with each player (who started with 10 Power) being able to take over the "Despot" Emperor role if they could get more Power than the Despot (who started with 1000)
  • Show Your Colours created Loyal and Seditious factions
  • Jobs for the Boys created Offices for players to hold, which the Despot could assign
  • Cruzeiro Control allowed the Director of the Bank to hand out Power
  • Delegation created lower-ranked Offices, since we had more players than Offices
  • Shred Tape allowed the Despot to pay Power to take actions, dependent on how high his Power was: this included a small Power cost for Vetoing proposals.
  • Spreading the Wealth redistributed the Power of exiled players to loyal ones
  • By Your Command required some Despot actions to be undertaken by Officers, at his command
  • Junta's Moon proposed a Coup mechanic where the Military, Naval and Air Force Officers could team up to make a proposal unvetoable. The Despot vetoed it.
  • Feudal System added Flunky actions
  • Conformance-Related Pay made Power income relative to the level of a player's Office
  • Street Cred added Credibility and Atrocities
  • You're Fired allowed Officers to dismiss others from their workplace
  • Jet Set Junta reproposed Coups, requiring all three branches of the military to explicitly support a Coup for it to enact.
  • Private Jet proposed a formal victory to any player other than Josh who had become Despot for a full week
  • Cred and Circuses allowed the Despot (at his own suggestion) to be deposed if Seditious players pooled enough Credibility between them
  • The Complete Banker removed the Director of the Bank from office, after they'd failed to pay wages
  • Authorisation Granted: Exile Purplebeard - the Despot asked his General to exile Purplebeard
  • Of Questionable Loyalty prevented players from being made Loyal against their wishes
  • Blue Helmets allowed UN proposals, at cost, which cannot be vetoed and which (crucially to the later victory) require players to spend Credibility or Power to vote on them
  • Identity Theft allowed the Police Chief to frame their rivals.
  • Slipping Away was the first UN proposal to be enacted; it allowed for the weekly stripping of some of the Despot's power away. It was subsequently weakened.
  • More Flunk - Oligarchs could bank Flunk to carry out Flunky Actions.
  • New Boss In Town - after authorising a massacre in response to continued challenges to their authority at the UN, the Despot found themselves deposed, with Clucky taking over as Despot in an apparently coordinated shuffle of power that saw RaichuKFM's Credibility stolen by the Chief of Police.

Non-dynastic proposals

  • A Distant Boomerang made explicit what happens when an enacting admin could not fulfil a step of a votable matter. Specifically, it resolved the question of whether a proposal could have lingering, time-bound effects - say, an effect that wouldn't come into effect until several days after the enactment took place.

Clucky and RaichuKFM paired up for a coin-toss Christmas Coup, making a UN Mandate a few minutes before Christmas Eve. For a UN Mandate, the rule was that "any Oligarch who wishes to vote on it must first spend either 1 Credibility or 5 Power" - since the game went into seasonal Hiatus at midnight on the 24th (where "no game actions may be taken except those described in the rules entitled “Votable Matters,” “Gamestate Tracking” and “Call for Judgement”"), regular players could not vote on the proposal because they could not take the action of spending Credibility/Power. (But the Despot/Emperor could, since he didn't count as an Oligarch, meaning that the proposal was still "open for voting".)

With two players in favour and the Despot voting against, the Coup timed out over the Christmas Hiatus and enacted. RaichuKFM won the coin toss.
