Ascension Address

Change “Admiral” to “Weatherman” and “Captain” to “Castaway” throughout the ruleset. Repeal all dynastic rules.
As crew to an exploration vessel, The Windfall, you’ve left behind the tyrannical rule and tentative peace of the quasi-mad Admiral TyGuy6, to brave new dangers and seek new wonders. But only weeks after departing the territories of the Island Nations, you find yourselves in a battle for survival! The Windfall is now a wreck, and what’s left of its crew and passengers have washed up on a strange island. Your mission of exploration continues here…

The following players were active at the start of the Dynasty:

Farsight, Kevan*, pokes*, Quincunx, Thunder, TyGuy6, ubq323

The following players were active at the end of the Dynasty:

Brendan*, Farsight, Kevan*, pokes*, Thunder, TyGuy6

Astimageon also popped in briefly as a player, but didn't submit any Proposals.

Posts of Interest

  • Is it unconventionally early? started the dynasty with the idea of a hallucination score (HSR) and a HSR-modifying bonus for the (as yet unchosen) traitor.
  • Wish You Were Here defined an Island with Locations, each Location being a rule
  • Good thing it’s not Giant Leaping Pigs introduced Hunger and allowed the hunting of Wild Gaudy Pigs anywhere on the Island
  • Your Days Are Numbered introduced things to Construct, many of them with undefined effects, and Date Actions - which could be taken once per day, but saved up for a while
  • So Lonely added an NPC called Little Mac, who was lost on the Island. He would never be found.
  • The Aztec Tomb prevented players from taking actions defined by a rule if their HSR was greater than the number of paragraphs in that rule.
  • Bring Your Watersocks added a Wreck location where castaways could salvage useful items. The wording was poor, so it was taken to mean that the items were removed from the list when they were collected, rather than everyone getting a randomized share as intended.
  • That's No Pig introduced Hallucination proposals, which could repeal one dynastic rule and where players whose HSR exceeded the HSR of the proposer were forced to vote FOR
  • Washing Ashore allowed new players to start at the Beach
  • Costaways added an Exertion mechanic and another bonus for the Traitor
  • Feet on Hot Sand allowed players to move around the Island
  • Friday discouraged stockpiling more than five days of Date Actions
  • Motivations added some bonuses for players to choose from, although in practice we only ever saw Signalers
  • Silver Bullet redefined the hallucinatory "complexity" of rules as the number of bullet points, rather than the number of paragraphs
  • After It! confined pig hunting to the Jungle location on the Island
  • One Man's Trash was a Hallucination Proposal to remove Items from the game, after Brendan and Thunder had grabbed most of them in twenty minutes flat. It passed.
  • Everyone's Trash attempted to repropose a variant of Items, still letting Brendan and Thunder keep one good one each. Other voters demurred.
  • Dream Within A Dream was a Hallucination Proposal to remove Hallucinations. Everyone's Trash had been cleverly written in such a way that if it enacted, this Hallucination would fail, but when Brendan saw that nobody was voting for Everyone's Trash in order to undermine this Hallucination, he self-killed it.
  • My Pillow Was Gone added Epiphany effects to rules; if they were repealed by Hallucination, we got to see what "really happened".
  • Dress-Down Friday gave Little Mac a location.
  • Facon was a Hallucination proposal to remove the Jungle and its pigs (with an Epiphany effect meaning that any Hunger lost through eating the meat was regained), after Thunder completed Kevan's hunt without sharing the spoils, and Brendan and Thunder quickly completed each others' hunts. It passed.
  • Flexitaria added berries and plants as an alternative source of food.
  • Call for Judgment: Gimme Poker - pokes decided that the repealing of Items as a GNDT storage location didn't mean you couldn't construct and use a shelter. Brendan noticed and called the question in this CfJ. An interesting discussion followed, in which the nature of an action taken in a GNDT comment was accepted as gamestate, at least for the purpose of interpreting it as not an orphan variable. pokes was thus allowed his rest in the shelter. (Others could not follow suit, however, as a concurrent Proposal adjusted the way shelters were used.)
  • I don’t wanna waaaste my time was a proposal from the Traitor forcing the Weatherman to reveal whether the game had a Traitor. It possibly backfired.
  • Truecon was a Hallucination that repealed the concept of Hunger entirely.
  • Found a Ouija board in the wreck gave the Island a name, using letters suggested individually by players: "Cpse"
  • Troubling Omens revealed that the game had a Traitor
  • Bad Dreams immediately tried to repeal the Traitor bonus actions, but it was voted down by the Emperor and DEF by Brendan (the Traitor) and Astimageon
  • Weak Foundations was a Hallucination proposal to repeal the Construction rule. It failed.
  • Berry Sad was a Hallucination to repeal the Clearing. It also failed.
  • I Can See Clearly Now repealed the Hallucination mechanic
  • Lifeguard Duty required players to be brought into play at the Beach by another player (where previously they could rescue themselves). This would lock three players out of the Island for the rest of the game.
  • Leaf Stroganoff replaced the Hunger-removing effect of plants with Story Points, since Hunger had been repealed as a Hallucination

Kevan and pokes developed a major lead in Story Points due to their heavy investment in collecting wood and writing the Message on the Beach (twice) before others got to it. With both players now able to increase their score at the same rate (maximum 2 SP per day from the Clearing), all that was happening is that they were approaching parity on the final rescue roll (30/35 would be a fair swing to the latter player, but 990/995 would be almost even). They agreed to end the game by hauling castaways onto the Beach to get a quorum there: Kevan won the rescue roll, and honored his alliance with pokes, tossing a coin to pass the mantle.

We chatted about the dynasty (collaboration, traitor, etc) in comments on this final post:

I got nerves writing my first few rules Proposals, perhaps because I was trying to do to much at once. I was working on adapting rules from the semi-cooperative board game, Castaways, but several key parts made little sense in a fully competetive, write-rules-as-you-go context.

This gave Kevan time to step in with a fun, if somewhat jarring, new angle: the Hallucination mechanic. It developed that dynastic rules could be repealed relatively easily by Castaways with low HSR. This quickly added some spice to what might have otherwise been a more straightforward game, but at the cost of "clearing out" some other key mechanics like Items, group hunting, and Hunger itself. Some good stuff here. I liked the gradually dissolving victory trigger, where one criteria became irrelevant every week. Bit of a shame that it became a game of keeping quiet and piling up victory points towards the end. The Hallucination mechanic was ultimately flawed for casually destroying people's rule work, but I thought it did a very good job of discouraging Fool's Gold - when two players pushed others aside to quickly stockpile a resource (which happened twice, with Items and with Hunger), it was easy for the remaining players to declare the whole business hallucinatory. I think the fact that Hunger and Items had been Fool's-Gilded made it natural enough that they wouldn't find a quorum willing to repropose them, so they didn't come back. --Kevan (talk) 10:05, 15 October 2019 (UTC)
