Ascension Address

Ascension Address: The Perfect Heist

What do you steal when you’ve already stolen everything you need?

A series of unexplained, and often spectactular, thefts had ignited the press and captured the conversations of the public. The culprit – or culprits – had clearly already made enough profit to retire, pay the rest of their team, and live out their days in comfort. But the heists continued, often taking things of symbolic value or because they were difficult, rather than due to any inherent worth. Eventually, they shifted from the improbable into the impossible; laws were stolen from the books, words were stolen from the dictionary. But who would pull off the ultimate heist, and steal victory?

Change Snail to Participant and Jury to Mastermind. The dynastic rule Race 5 replaces its content as specified in that rule; other dynastic rules are repealed. Include the building blocks “Everyone’s Playing”, “Precondition Unidling”, and “Reinitialisation” in the ruleset. The dynastic tracking page for this dynasty is “The Heist Teams”. I will not specify imperial style in this post, as (with two Masterminds) the situation is more complex than usual, but may specify it in the comments.

Players

The following players were active in the early game: ais523, Brendan, CyberStella, Desertfrog, Habanero, Janet, JonathanDark, Josh, qenya, Raven1207, SingularByte

The following players were active at the end of the dynasty: ais523, Brendan, Habanero, JonathanDark, Josh, Raven1207, SingularByte, Snisbo

Gameplay summary

Players are randomly assigned onto one of two teams (with the Masterminds always on opposite teams), each named after a randomly chosen word. Players have a limited ability to slowly change the dynastic rules, and upon getting their team's name into the ruleset, every player on the team scores a point, and then the teams are rerolled.

Log of triumphs

This section contains an explanation of how each Triumph point was scored, together with links to proposals and CFJs that were directly relevant to the attempts to score.

  1. Team "rebuilt", formed of ais523, Brendan, Habanero, JonathanDark, and SingularByte, broke the restriction that rules must contain only English words by editing the rule containing it, then attempted to change "result" to "rebult" to "rebuilt". The last change initially failed due to bad rolls on Heist Actions, but was completed the next day. (The other team's target was "gambling", which they made no progress towards.)
    • Starting to build up a corpus of case law – While the team was out of Heist Actions, JonathanDark attempted to score the point early via correcting "rebult" to "rebuilt" using a core rule that allows for correcting typos. However, this was ruled to not be legal because the misspelt word was introduced into the ruleset intentionally, and thus was not a typographical mistake.
  2. Team "creatable", formed of ais523, Brendan, JonathanDark, Raven1207, and SingularByte, changed "Votable" to "cotable" to "coatable" to "croatable" to "creatable", using their numbers to perform the changes in fairly quick succession. (The other team was too small to be able to make much progress on their target "exemption", having only got as far as changing "optionally" to "omptionally" before the other team blocked them.)
    • Triumphs unclaimed and its CFJ edition – Scoring had accidentally become broken due to Claims being mostly but not fully repealed from the ruleset, so this had to be fixed by proposal or CFJ in order to make Triumphing possible, delaying the attempt to score.
    • Precondition unidling preconditions – In addition to using the dynastic gameplay, team "exemption" attempted to get their word into the ruleset directly via proposal, but this was noticed during the edit window and the word was edited out of the proposal.
  3. Team "rupture", formed of Brendan, Josh, Raven1207, and SingularByte, changed "team" to "tear", then (using the Brains role) "tear" to its synonym "rupture". (The other team, team "overcome", had attempted to score earlier, by breaking the restriction that a replacement-to-synonym must leave a rule with the same meaning; they were intending to change "affected" to "overcome" but went quite early in an attempt to get in before the other team, and didn't roll well enough on the dice to score.)
  4. This Triumph point was contested surprisingly hotly, between team "praying" (ais523, Brendan, JonathanDark, Raven1207, and SingularByte) and team "folk" (Josh and Habanero). Both words were very easy, having very short paths available; as a consequence, both teams went early (first team "folk" aimed for "following" → "folkowing" → "folk owing", then team "praying" aimed for "saying" -> "paying" → "praying", but both attempts failed due to bad dice rolls due to how early they were attempted). Each team then moved to block the other's shortest route (with "folkowing" and "saying" being Guessed, and an attempt by team "praying" to intentionally break the Tools of the Trade rule in order to stop team "folk" scoring when their timeout elapsed, which would happen first). At that point, the rules got in the way:
    • Broken Swords was enacted, which restored the restriction that rules must contain only English words. However, "The Crew {M}", the rule that was most commonly being edited in an attempt to score, already contained the nonexistent word "omptionally" from a previous scoring attempt.
    • Team "folk" attempted to score by changing "Role" → "bole" → "bolk" → "folk" in "The Crew {M}". At this point, Tools of the Trade was subject to the "folkowing conditions", one of which was that the edited rule would contain only real words (and thus the attempt failed due to "omptionally"). This was, however, not immediately noticed; instead, a debate arose as to whether or not the Tools of the Trade rule had been successfully changed by changing "character" to "charactery", which would have broken the scoring attempt, and that depended on whether or not the folkowing conditions were part of the same sentence as the rule itself (as the conditions contained change-blocking dollar signs, but the rest of the rule didn't).
    • Clarity on What the End of a Sentence is Per the Rules attempted to resolve the issue by reverting the scoring attempt, and also reverting the ruleset to the version that contained "charactery". During this, it was noticed that nonsense words like "omptionally" and "folkowing" prevented Tools of the Trade from working, and thus the version of the ruleset that was being reverted to had never actually validly existed. Nonetheless, the CFJ enacted anyway, but there was disagreement about how the ruleset changed as a consequence.
    • Reading Rainbow changed the Tools of the Trade rule to not be blocked by nonsense words, and also rewrote the rule to no longer contain "folkowing" (nor "charactery", making the exact resolution of the revert irrelevant). This effectively created an admin-advantage situation, in that either team would be able to score immediately as soon as the proposal were enacted (because each team had at least two independent routes to score in three actions, making it almost impossible to block them using guesses). JonathanDark, on team "praying", intentionally enacted the proposal while ais523 (who had a Focus point available) was online.
    • At that point, JonathanDark, ais523's Focus point, and ais523 changed "having" → "paving" → "paying" → "praying", and team "praying" scored.
  5. Team "automatic", formed of ais523 and Brendan, scored immediately upon team selection because "automatic" was a word in the ruleset already.
  6. Team "paving", ais523 and SingularByte, changed "saying" → "paying" → "paving". This was somewhat unusual because it went through a couple of words that had been in the Ruleset recently (which actually caused an attempt by the other team to Guess-block an alternative route "praying" → "paying" → "paving" to fail because "praying" had been added to the ruleset too recently) – in fact, "paving" was a word that had recently been removed from the ruleset! Ironically, the word that Josh's guess was changed from was "saying". The scoring post contained some discussion about how the win could have been blocked by the other (much larger) team.
    • Moving the target further away – It was recognised that "paving" was much easier than the other team's target, "coroner". This inspired a proposal to reduce the chance that easy words would be selected.
  7. Team "credit", ais523 and SingularByte (plus Snisbo, who was assigned to the team upon unidling, just before the team scored), changed "believes" to "credits" as a synonym, and then to "credit", acting before the other team had made their move.
    • What if Danny Ocean was a cop? – That other team, team "throbbing", had had their Mastermind recruited as a Spy. Considering that this might be overpowered, a proposal was created to prevent the same situation happening again.
  8. Team "village", ais523 and SingularByte (again!), scored their Agenda "reboot" by breaking the restriction on Brains that the synonym must retain the same meaning in the context of the sentence being changed, then changing "reset" to its synonym "reboot" using the Brains action. Because the scored word was an Agenda rather than a Target, this did not reroll the teams.
  9. Team "untracked", Brendan, Habanero, JonathanDark, Josh, Raven1207, and Snisbo, got "untracked" into the Bank via copying "orphan" from the Appendix using a Treasurer action, then changing it to its BlogNomic-specific synonym "untracked" using Brains. In order to allow the score to count, they previously had to break the rule that the Bank was flavour text, which required at least three Heist Actions because the rule in question was protected by dollar signs, and in practice required two more due to team "village" reverting the first two using Archivist. Team "village" had made no progress on their Target, instead spending their actions on an Agenda score and on interfering with the other team.

Final Ruleset

Gamestate

The gamestate page was The Heist Teams, which contains the final contents of the tracked gamestate and its history. (SingularByte's Triumphs count was disputed at the time the dynasty ended, with the relevant CFJ abandoned due to the end of the dynasty, but made no difference to the results.)

The ruleset was the battlefield on which the dynasty was played; its history can be followed by stepping forwards from this permalink.

The Dice Roller log for the dynasty is available at Dice Roller 231.

Ascension

SingularByte took advantage of a rule that caused words that effectively deleted invalid-English words from the ruleset to effectively remove the stipulation that the dice rolled by a Heist Action had to be a DICE48. Because that dice controlled the rate at which the ruleset could be edited, and there were no longer stipulations about which dice had to be rolled when performing a Heist Action, SingularByte used a DICE0 in order to produce a 0-hour cooldown between ruleset edits, allowing for arbitrarily many edits and thus the addition of arbitrary text to the rules. This was used to create a rule that gave Raven1207 victory. (Although the ruleset prevented mutable rules from giving victory directly, it did not prevent mutable rules creating immutable rules, which weren't subject to the same restrictions.)

Discussion of the victory itself took place in an announcement thread and the DoV. As ais523 doubted that the DoV was even legal to make (due to dynastic rules blocking DoVs under most circumstances), both the DoV and the victory were upheld by CFJ, to remove any doubt about the resulting gamestate, and the ruleset was set to a known state.
